The Federal Government has directed the Nigerian Electricity
Regulatory Commission and Nigeria Electricity Management Service Agency
to investigate the electricity accident in Calabar that led to deaths of
seven people at a football viewing centre in Calabar.
In a
statement issued on Friday, Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing
said both NERC and NEMSA would work with the power distribution company
in the area to unravel the cause of the incident.
It
said, “NERC and NEMSA have been directed to thoroughly investigate the
incident and its causes and to take regulatory action as appropriate.
“Port
Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company has already commenced a
comprehensive investigation in order to implement procedures and
necessary actions to forestall future occurrences.”
The government said it was saddened by the death of the football fans at the viewing centre in Calabar, Cross River State.
“The
Ministry of Power, Works and Housing (Power Sector), commiserates with
the families of those who lost their lives or were injured in the
electrical accident, the people and government of Cross River State over
the ugly incident,” it said.
