Bakassi tensions: Cameroon dispatches war ships to Calabar

A Cameroonian ship which had some senior naval officials aboard, arrived the Calabar waters at 12 noon on Thursday, May 18.

The vessel also had Cameroonian journalists and civilian dignitaries aboard.

The commander of information at the eastern naval command, Commander Abdulkadir, said the Nigerian Navy authorities were yet to be formally briefed about the mission of the flag ship.

It is yet to be unraveled why the Cameroonian war ship is on Nigerian waters

The ambassador of Cameroon in Nigeria was escorted into the ship where he received salutes from both Nigerian Navy and the Cameroon Navy personnel before he shook hands with his compatriot.

Abdulkadir however said that they would pay courtesy call on the flag officer commanding eastern naval command, Rear Admiral James Oluwole, during which time they would disclose their mission in Nigeria.

The ambassador of Cameroon did not talk to journalists, but the ship is believed to be on a friendly visit.

Cameroon in recent times have been mobilizing navy staff members to Lake Chad to stall Boko Haram threat in the area.

About a year ago when the country announced about contributing 2,450 troops to the Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF), it sent 500 navy staff members.

According to The Voice of America, the fresh claim was made by the navy chief of staff, Rear Admiral Mendoua Jean.

The military official alleged that terrorists might be using Lake Chad after having been disloded from Sambisa Forest by the Nigerian army.

He also insisted that the deposited troops would spare no effort and neglect no detail to crush notorious sect.
